Abstract
The department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering has created a new course called Visual Analytics for the Energy Industry (EPE -5120) as part of the Master of Engineering (MEng)program. Data Analytics is one of the four specializations of the MEng program. Information visualization and visual analytics is an important aspect of data analytics. EPE 5120 course in this the data analytics specialization is designed to impart conceptual and practical skills to students to create effective visualizations and derive insights to solve business and technical problems.
I embarked on an initiative to create OER content to supplement the course material for the EPE-5120 course which are hands-on assignments based on the application of data visualization and visual analytics techniques to gain insights from oil and gas / energy datasets. Three assignment guides have been created by working through three different public data sources pertaining to the energy industry. These hands-on guides were created by executing visual analytics projects using Tableau software and are intended to impart students with hands-on skills to tackle specific industry operational and business challenges. Students can use the Tableau Destkop of Tableau Public software to carry out these assignments.
The efforts were supported by the UW Libraries Open Textbook Grant in Spring 2024.
