Abstract
Description
Rape is a subject and offense often left out of conversation. There is a fear surrounding the word, whether it’s talking about personal experiences or how individuals are treated in the justice system. Since 1970, there have been several influential court cases and laws established that have created a different understanding of rape and how it is handled. The culture surrounding rape has also evolved, taking on issues through social and artistic activism. This research is meant to bring light to the development of rape laws and influential court cases, including issues on marital rape, statutory marital rape, and campus rape. To speak about an issue that's socially taboo is not to discredit the offense, but to provide information pertinent to the issue and to work towards improving the social and legal barriers surrounding rape.
