The geology exposed around the park—representing more than 300 million years of Earth history—is largely visible because the North Platte River cut a canyon through this region, leaving the landscape seen today. These rock exposures allow a better understanding of the geologic history of the region, telling a story of inland flooding, dinosaurs, mountain building, and volcanism.
