Building Confidence Through Connection

Smith, Shannon
Elder, Abbey
Abstract
Both new and experienced Open Education professionals can have difficulty finding community in their local context. Depending on the size and scope of your local Open Education efforts, you may be a unit of one or an employee for whom OER is a secondary (or even tertiary) priority. Residing professionally in this space can lead to feelings of isolation and self-isolating behaviors which impact our professional identities. In this presentation, Abbey Elder and Shannon Smith will lead a dialogue with the audience guided by their experiences working in Open Education. They will share how finding community and leveraging that support has helped them gain confidence in their work. In addition to sharing their own experiences, the speakers will engage the audience through guiding questions about being an Open Education professional and navigating difficult topics such as building expertise, combating imposter syndrome, and finding your voice.
