Simulation Experiences in Occupational Therapy: Doctoral Curriculum for the University of North Dakota

Harris, Nicole C.
Abstract
Description
Simulation is an emerging tool being utilized in healthcare education to prepare students for clinical learning experiences and entry level practice as future clinicians. Simulation provides health care students with realistic situations that occur in their professional fields in a controlled and safe environment. While simulation has been widely accepted and proven to be an effective educational tool in many healthcare education programs, many occupational therapy programs are still in the initial phases of use (Cook et al., 2011). Contributing factors in the healthcare profession that are driving the need for the use of simulation for clinical education include the following; the growing workforce demands, limited staffing to provide trainees with oversight in some practice areas, competition for clinical site placements caused by the increasing numbers of academic programs, reimbursement guidelines driving productivity demands, student supervision guidelines, and increasing safety regulations (Bethea, Castillo, & Harvison, 2014). The University of North Dakota’s occupational therapy program is in the process of transitioning to a doctoral program in the fall of 2019. Incorporating simulations into the curriculum is timely and necessary. For this project a faculty training program was developed to train faculty members on simulation and the importance of incorporating simulations into the curriculum. Additionally, a syllabus and six simulations were created for implementation into the doctoral curriculum.
