The OER Creator’s Palette: Using Generative AI Alongside Other Content Types

Smith, Shannon
Abstract
With so many tools and content types in our OER creation palettes, it can be difficult to know where content is coming from. This session will discuss challenges the presenters have encountered with finding the breadcrumbs of OER content being adapted, and their approach to leaving a pedagogical guide for future creators. Amber Hoye and Shannon Smith will share their perspective on integrating generative AI alongside other materials including those that may be openly licensed or under fair use. Their goal is to set the stage for transparent attribution of this evolving technology that is digestible and actionable. How can we build upon the work our field has already done in order to create space for this type of content? Using a modified version of the popular TASL model (title, author, source, and license) strategies will be provided to promote reflection that enhances attribution for generative AI content. From both an instructional design and librarian perspective, presenters will guide attendees through discussion on what may be missing from our existing popular attribution practices. Together, we’ll consider how OER creators can provide transparency and a clear guide for others who might want to remix your work.
