Abstract
"Advanced Nuclear Energy: An Overview” covers information presented on July 28, 2025, in Kemmerer, Wyoming, at a stakeholder engagement event, "Community Conversations on Natrium and Kemmerer's Energy Future." We include a re-recorded version of the presentation as well as a research brief summarizing the presentation. The brief also draws from and summarizes relevant sections of the full Public Participation and Stakeholder Engagement Milestone Report which fully reviews and reports on the Community Conversations event. All events and publications were completed in association with the Department of Energy funded research project "Engaging Wyoming Communities in an Environmental Justice Approach for Advanced Nuclear Energy Facility Siting." The presentation and brief outline the core elements of advanced nuclear energy—what it is, how it differs from conventional nuclear energy, and why interest in these technologies is expanding. They review key technical design features of advanced reactors, including small modular reactors and microreactors, and discuss the feasibility of meeting promises to reduce waste, costs, and safety and proliferation risks.
