Thinking Beyond OER Content: Building Accessibility into Your OER Program

Abstract
Open education professionals are strong advocates for the importance of accessibility as a benefit of open educational resources (OER) for student success. However, we primarily focus on the OER content itself, and are not fully addressing how we can model principles of accessibility within our own institutional programs or practices. Additionally, with an understanding that 1 in 6 people in the world identify as having an illness and/or disability, it is essential elements of accessibility are incorporated into all practices (World Health Organization). Presenters will discuss how they are intentionally building accessibility into the University of Wyoming Libraries OER grant program. They will also share future plans to develop accessibility into the program. This program is situated in a medium-sized, four-year public university, in a rural state in Wyoming. This 15-minute session will focus on conference Theme 2: Equity and Inclusion in OER and provide attendees with actionable examples of program accessibility from the past and present of an OER grant program. The goal of incorporating accessibility into our grant program has been not only to increase the access of the program, but the potential to deepen the awareness and understanding of accessibility for the benefit of instructors, library staff, and other campus stakeholders.
