In the heart of the Rockies, 8000 feet above the level of the sea, lies that Wonderland of the United States, The Yellowstone National Park. The park is 65 miles in length and 55 miles wide, covering an area of over 3000 square miles. This marvelous region with all its sublimity and grandeur was appropriately set apart by Congress in 1872 and dedicated as a public pleasure ground for the enjoyment and education of the people, equally free to rich and poor, American or foreigner. From the time we pass from the picturesque ravine shown in this view through the Golden Gate, so named from the yellowish hue of the rocks, we can prepare ourselves to meet the stupendous, awe-inspiring and beautiful sights that await us in this arena of sublime phenomena, surrounded by snow-clad peaks which through ages have been the silent witnesses of the fierce struggle of the elements within their grand enclosure. During our long journey through the park we are greeted with the greatest variety of scenery, the numerous hot springs, many geysers majestically spouting forth their immense volumes of water and steam at more or less regular intervals, the superbly tinted pools of geysers in inaction, crystal lakes, silvery rivers, "paint pots" which outvie the artist in the coloring of their mixtures, the grand terraces whose gently falling waters are gorgeous in their variegated hues, the beautiful Yellowstone Lake with its abundance of trout, the Great Falls of the Yellowstone, and lastly the culminating feature of sublimity, the Grand Canon of the Yellowstone.
