HIIT vs endurance: Which is better for overall health?

Webber, Elaine
Abstract
Description
Exercise fads come and go, but the rise of high intensity interval training (HIIT) seems to be a lasting new exercise form. It's rise in popularity is due mainly to its relatively small required time investment and its decreased load and stress on the body in comparison to traditional endurance training. However, there is debate surrounding whether the benefits of HIIT can compete with those of endurance training. This presentation compares HIIT and endurance exercise on the basis of VO2 max testing, weight loss, and increases in mitochondrial density and efficiency to determine which is better for overall health. It also goes into the unique potential benefits and applications of HIIT that endurance exercise does not have.
