Relationship Between the Emotion of Sadness and Music Choices, The

thesis

Two studies investigated the relationship between sad mood and sad music. Both studies used a questionnaire measuring the correlation between music preference and mood. The first study conducted by the current author with fellow students Shelby Prussia and Morgan Wallace surveyed 34 people of various ages and genders throughout America via an online survey. The second study was done individually and used the same questions with a targeted demographic of college aged females. The results indicated that people are more likely to pick sad music when in a somber mood to reflect their emotions, to aid in a sad expression even if they normally prefer upbeat and conventional music.
