Supporting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students in Mathematical Reasoning and Learning the Math Register with the DMP
The project presented here integrated the two grants awarded by the SJRC. Both research projects are part of a bigger research project directed by Dr. Richard Kitchen "The Discursive Mathematics Protocol (DMP)." The main project goal is to advance an instructional protocol designed to support all students’ mathematical learning, particularly English Learners, to develop mathematical reasoning and mathematics language.
Karla Matute focused her study on the development of mathematics register. Libni Castellón study the development of mathematical reasoning. Both research projects were conducted in different schools and helped to advance the protocol and the logistics for its implementation. We learned how better support teachers to help their students learn mathematics while they develop reasoning and language skills simultaneously.
