Other Man, The
presentation
posted on 2021-11-15, 18:35 authored by Chris HolmesI wrote, directed and produced a short film (20-30 minutes) that I hope to submit to national film festivals. The film is inspired by French New Wave films from the 1950s and '60s, as well as American cinema from the 1960s and '70s. Specific influences include Jean-Luc Godard's À bout de souffle and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver. The film is a portrait of Luce Parker, a man who is unable to adequately reveal his affection for the girl he loves. In the film I attempt to draw a sympathetic portrait of a stalker, a character that is typically cast as a "villain." This scenario is inspired by material from a crime and deviance seminar I took in the Sociology Department. My goal is to demonstrate that "bad guys" are relative and culturally defined, and that someone like a stalker can be a sympathetic, round character.
