Cap of Liberty-Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Park.

This is an extinct hot spring cone standing at the base of Mammoth Hot Springs near the road. It is fifty-two feet high and twenty feet in diameter at its base. It is formed of overlapping layers of deposit, evidently having been built up by the overflow of water through the orifice at the top. In the background is Fort Yellowstone, the present headquarters of two companies of United States Cavalry, the Commanding Officer being Superintendent of the park. Liberty Cap is aptly named, and when looked at from another point of view the resemblance is very marked to the Cap of Liberty. The old cone is of a dirty white color, with now and then a whiter surface, pieces having recently chipped off.
